Inventory overview
Inventory is the record of what you physically hold: how much of each part, where it sits, which lot or serial number it carries, and every move that changed it.
It is the layer underneath the BOM. A bill of materials says what a product needs; inventory says what you actually have and where to find it.
What inventory tracks

Stock is held against a revision, not a part
This is the first thing to get used to. A part can have several revisions, and stock
belongs to a specific one. Ten units of REVA and four of REVB are separate holdings
that happen to share a part number.
The part details dialog opens on one revision at a time, and the revision picker at the top switches between them.
Assigned and unassigned
Stock arrives before anyone decides where to put it, so every part revision has two figures:
- Unassigned is stock you hold but have not placed anywhere yet
- Assigned is stock placed in a specific location
Both are real stock. The split tells you how much still needs putting away. Assigning is covered in Assign stock.
How inventory reaches a BOM
Parts on a BOM line come from inventory. When you add a part to a bill of materials you are searching this list, and the availability figure in the BOM's Summarized view is read back from here.
That means a shortage shows up in two places at once: as a low figure in inventory, and as a Short label against the demand in the BOM.
The relationship runs both ways
Committing a BOM also creates inventory records for the assemblies and products it numbers, so a released assembly becomes something you can hold stock of.
What you can do from here
- See stock, price and part number for everything you hold
- Open any part and read its attributes, locations, purchase history and lifecycle
- Place stock into locations, move it between them, and scrap it
- Track batches by lot and individual units by serial number
- Borrow stock for a build and release it back
- Count stock and correct what the system believes
