Syncing serial numbers
A repair action for serialised parts, used when the serial numbers on record stop matching the stock figures.
Open the part, go to the Location tab, and select Sync Serial Numbers to Stock.
What it does
It reconciles the two records against each other, so the count of serial numbers and the stock quantity agree again.
When you need it
Rarely. Normal moves keep the two in step by themselves, because assigning or relocating a serialised part updates both at once.
Reach for it when:
- stock was imported in bulk and the numbers were loaded separately
- an operation was interrupted part way through
- the Location tab shows a quantity that does not match the units listed on the Serial Number tab
Treat a mismatch as a symptom
Syncing corrects the record, it does not explain why the record went wrong. If you find yourself running it regularly, something upstream is not doing its job, and that is worth reporting rather than working around.
Before you sync
Check the physical stock first. Sync makes the system self consistent, which is not the same as making it correct. If the shelf disagrees with both figures, a cycle count is the right tool, and sync afterwards if the numbers still need aligning.
